Pregnancy FAQs
Pregnancy is an exciting time—but it often comes with a lot of questions. At Capital Women’s Care, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Whether you’re wondering about what’s normal, what to avoid, or how to stay healthy, this FAQ page covers many of the common concerns we hear from our patients.
When Will I Feel My Baby Move?
Most women begin to feel fetal movement around 20 weeks of pregnancy. As your baby grows, you will feel movements more frequently and clearly.
See the section on “Fetal Kick Counts” for more information.
Why Am I So Tired? What’s the Best Sleep Position?
Fatigue is very common during pregnancy—you may need 8–10 hours of sleep per night.
- The best sleep position is on your side, which promotes healthy blood flow to your baby.
- Avoid lying flat on your back, which can lower your blood pressure.
- For added comfort, use a pillow behind your back and between your knees.
Can I Use a Jacuzzi or Whirlpool?
No. Using a Jacuzzi or whirlpool is not recommended during pregnancy due to the risk of overheating and infection.
Can I Care for My Pets?
If you have cats, please inform your doctor.
- Avoid changing the litter box to reduce the risk of toxoplasmosis, a rare infection from cat feces.
- If you must, wear gloves and wash your hands thoroughly afterward.
Can I Go to the Salon for Treatments?
- Hair coloring and nail treatments are generally safe if done in well-ventilated areas.
- If possible, avoid chemical treatments during the first trimester.
Can I Travel?
In an uncomplicated pregnancy, travel by car, plane, or train is generally safe. Always consult your doctor before planning a trip.
Travel tips:
- Move around or stretch your legs for 5–10 minutes every hour during long trips.
- Wear support hose to improve circulation.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Always wear a seatbelt—position it over your shoulder and under your belly.
- Avoid travel to areas with Zika virus risk. If your partner may have been exposed, use condoms for at least 6 months to prevent birth defects.
What Should I Know About Dental Care?
- Maintain good oral hygiene and keep regular dental appointments.
- Dental x-rays are safe with abdominal shielding.
- Safe antibiotics include Penicillin, Cephalosporin, and Erythromycin.
- Avoid Tetracycline.
- Fillings and dental procedures are safe during pregnancy.
- Local anesthesia (like Lidocaine without epinephrine) is acceptable.
Can I Have Sex During Pregnancy?
Yes, unless you are experiencing complications or it becomes too uncomfortable.
Avoid sex or strenuous exercise if you have:
- Vaginal bleeding
- Leaking fluid
- Preterm labor
- Chest pain
- Regular contractions
- Decreased fetal movement
- Growth-restricted baby
- Headaches, dizziness, or severe fatigue
